Our visit to London during London Design Week didn’t disappoint, as Kate, Jo and Megan attended the 25th anniversary of 100% Design at Olympia to discover the latest in the design world.
Right from the off we were surrounded by the best in show. The floor was split into 5 different sections with over 400+ exhibitors showcasing their products and services. Some sections focused on craftsmanship, detail and quality whilst others comprised of high-end contemporary soft furnishings and wall coverings. There was furniture, lighting and accessories on show, a Design & Build section featuring innovative technology, as well as ‘Emerging Brands’ which displayed a whole host of new talent. From fabrics to furniture, finishes to flooring – there was so much to see.
One major talking point though, was a collaboration between Kirkby Fabrics and Transport for London (TfL) who transformed the inside of a decommissioned 1967 Victoria Line tube train with their take on ‘Underground Overhaul’. ‘Underground Volume Two’ is a collection of ‘upholstery velvets and ready-made cushions derived from original moquette designs historically used as seating fabric across the London Underground’. Kirkby had it covered – literally – from curtaining, right through to paint finishes in order to tie the interior scheme together.
Amongst all of the products and features on offer, sat the Auditorium, where we listened to Roddy Clarke address some major global concerns in his topical talk, ‘The Importance of Restoration in a Circular Economy’. Roddy, and guest speakers: Adam Hills, Polly Waite and Aiveen Daly, expressed how important it is for us as designers to help tackle this problem. Just by simply preserving antiques which have stood the test of time to date, and investing in timeless pieces, we can gradually steer ourselves away from this increase in consumerism and the throw-away culture which we find ourselves living in. This is a topic we are all aware of and something each and every one of us should be helping to combat.
Fisch gained a huge insight into colour trends and cutting-edge brands at 100% Design and had a great time wandering around all of the stands, addressing wellbeing, energy efficiency, waste and sustainability. Climate change is a huge topic on the agenda and we enjoyed meeting the company's and suppliers putting this into their own designs.
We're looking forward to including this inspiration in the interior and architectural projects at Fisch over the coming months.
